Services for schools

Provision of an advisory, information and support service accessible through a telephone helpline which will be available Monday to Friday, 8:45 to 17:00.
Provision of an out-of-hours emergency service.
Liaison with Health & Safety executive and other enforcement bodies on behalf of schools and settings.
Professional support during legal/enforcement process, e.g. Civil claims.
Liaison with Health Authority personnel on individual special needs issues.
Maintenance of health and safety communications which will be achieved via a termly newsletter.
Telephone advice in relation to contractor management issues.
Advice on proper use of the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and the Single Central Record system.
Provision of advice on every aspect of Educational Visits management from inclusion and charging to leader competence and risk management.
Emergency planning and business continuity advice.
Production of information updates on health & safety developments via a dedicated secure website.
Advice and assistance on Asbestos Management including revision and updates to asbestos register, monitoring sheets and management plan.
Support with behaviour management plans.
Provision of advice and support in relation to safeguarding in the broadest sense as outlined by Ofsted.

Development & deployment of policy and guidance

Production and updating of model health & safety arrangements/procedures in line with legislative requirements - all policies to be reviewed annually.
Model procedures will cover staff wellbeing, premises management issues, curriculum safety, behaviour management, medical care plans and associated guidance, safeguarding requirements as outlined by Ofsted and off-site visits.
Identification and communication of new legislation including recommended actions.
Provision of health & safety policy and supporting performance standards.
* Reporting of serious incidents and accidents to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) on behalf of the schools and settings.
Health & safety induction for new Headteachers and other Senior Managers.
Support for investigation of serious accidents and incidents.

Monitoring of performance, review and audit

Development of a safety management system and supporting schools in its deployment.
* Auditing of health and safety management systems and monitoring health, safety and welfare standards. All schools will be audited once every 3 years in consultation with the school.

Additional pay as you go user services

(Schools may use dedicated contact time for any/all of these elements)

Pre-Ofsted inspections on health & safety standards and compliance with Ofsted requirements.
Post-Ofsted support if required.
Fire safety advice and written Fire Risk Assessments to ensure compliance with current regulations.
On-site training on procedures in relation to off-site visits.
On-site assistance with conducting specific complex risk assessments and advice on control measures.
On-site Display Screen Equipment (DSE) risk assessment and advice on control measures.
On-site assistance in relation to contractor management issues.
Attendance at Governor meetings.
On-site manual handling training.
Governor training.
Bespoke health & safety training briefings - we have access to other professional training providers, e.g. moving and handling of people, Safegaurding and child protection.

Core services contact days/hours

Core services will include scheduled contact days/hours for all schools that enter into the Annual Service Level Agreement with Kym Allan Health and Safety Consultants. Details of the days/hours made available are set out in the Terms and Conditions of the SLA. These days/hours can be used to provide the following services:

Inspection of school buildings.
Development of school policies and procedures.
Assistance with planning development of school buildings.
Assistance with the development of local health & safety arrangements.

Academies, Aided and Foundation schools will receive an additional contact day each 3 years for auditing the school's health & safety management systems/procedures.

Competent Person Service

All employers employing 5 or more staff must have effective health and safety management systems in place which include written risk assessments and a written health and safety management system. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 states that employers and the self-employed are expected to take reasonable steps to help themselves identify risks, e.g. by looking at appropriate sources of information, such as relevant legislation, appropriate guidance, supplier manuals and manufacturers’ instructions and reading trade press, or seeking advice from competent sources. KAHSC Can provide common sense, no nonsense solutions to your health and safety problems.

KAHSC can provide this competent advice and information to small business owners, particularly on care settings who do not have the appropriate skills or time to undertake this important role for themselves.

Health & Saftey Policy Advice and Support

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, every employer with five or more employees must prepare and revise a written health and safety policy. This policy needs to contain three parts – a statement of intent, an organisation section and an arrangements section. Health and safety policies need to be useful and appropriate for the business in hand rather than simply a chore to write, read once and hidden in a file, only to be brought out when an Inspector calls!

KAHSC can provide you with advice and support in writing your Policy statement, organisation and arrangements to meet the needs of your business and your staff.

Risk Assessments / DSE Assessments

Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 it is a legal requirement for organisations with 5 or more employees to have recorded risk assessments in place. Failure to provide these may lead to prosecution and difficulty in defending any personal injury claim.

Risk assessments must be 'suitable and sufficient' and be carried out by a 'competent person' i.e. someone who is familiar with the hazards of the work in hand, understands the risk assessment process, is familiar with the requirements of the supporting legislation and knows how to adequately manage and ultimately control the risks to employees and others who may come into contact with the business.

Are you and your staff sitting comfortably? KAHSC can carry out Display Screen Equipment (DSE) assessments which will ensure that you comply with current regulations and reduce the risk of your staff suffering from the aches and pains sometimes associated with computer use. You will be provided with advice and information on how to reduce the risk of staff absence which may have been caused by a badly designed workstation, working environment or user posture.

KAHSC can provide advice and support to small businesses, particularly in the care services, on the production of appropriate risk assessments which are based on common sense, no nonsense advice.

Fire Risk Assessment

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, all employers with 5 or more employees must have a written fire risk assessment. Failure to have a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment can leave employers open to prosecution by the Fire Service. Under the Reform Order, the 'responsible person' for the premises must carry out a fire risk assessment, nominate a sufficient number of competent persons (fire marshals) to assist in implementing the emergency procedures identified in the fire risk assessment, and make sure that appropriate management systems are in place.
